Hi all, just downloaded cpu-z and was amazed to see that my cpu clock was 1600MHz

Its ment to be 2400MHz is it not, lo i do notice when i play a game or run an app that uses lots of load on cpu that it throttles upto 2400MHz.

Are these new cpus ment to do that or is there something else happening here

Regards

Yes, it is saving energy by throttling down when not needed.

Hi again Mike

I was thinking along those lines, just needed that confirmed ,ty for that

Would it be Vista power saving doing that or just built into the actual workings of the cpu.

Good idea that if so ,not like the old cpus always at constant speed.

It is usually the OS that runs power saving now, though there are options in the BIOS.

Have a look at RMClock too.

Will do mike ty, could be that power saving scheme indeed, as far as bios is concerned, am locked outta most if not all settings on this motherboard, very basic board/defualt bios.

An upgrade aint to far down the line for me ,need a good board and have me eye on one, so then al be able to tweak the bios to my liking and not always default settings :)

Not too sure if i want it at 2400MHz all the time anyways, its good that it idles when not in use.

My laptop (Dual 1.83GHz) runs mostly at about dual 1GHz by default but peaks up when busy. (According to RMClock.) I can throttle it right back using that RMClock.

Is there a BIOS setting to allow the OS to handle power saving? At one time you had to enable that at install time but don't know if things have improved.

There is a setting in the BIOS for most CPUs that allows you to set it to throttle back when its not needed. Can't remember the name for Intel but AMD is Cool and Quiet or something like that I think.

Edit: Just remembered, the Intel version is SpeedStep
