Hello, I recently purchased a "Core 2 quad pro Q6600" for my new system. When I have connected it up with all the other components and apply a power source, the CPU fan starts to work as normal etc. However, it also produces a high pitch continuous sound, rather like an alarm. This noise just continues and does not cease unless I turn the power off. Any ideas about the problem?

- CPU as stated above
- GFX, EN 8800 GT 512mb GDDR3
- RAM, OCZ 2x1gb DDR2
- Motherboard, ASUS P5B
- PSU, OCZ stealth X stream

Are you seeing any problems with the system post'ing?

If not and it's booting into your os normally I'd suggest it's simply the hsf trying to keep up.

The Q6600 run's hot and needs a decent hsf to tame the temps.

If you're running the stock cooler that came with the chip, bin it. Have a look at the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 pro. Very cheap and about the best air cooler for a cpu on the market.

The Tuniq tower does run temps a little lower but it's nearly 3 times as much and over twice as heavy, which stresses the motherboard.

Or you could order what I have for my Q6600 and get a Swiftech H2O 120. It's a 120mm radiator/cpu block/pump all built into two units. Pre-configured for connection.

Thanks for the reply, so is it worth letting it run for bit of time and seeing if the noise stops?

Yup, no harm in it. In fact, you might be better upon switching the pc on to go into your bios and bring up the temps for the cpu and just leave the pc sat idle and monitor the temp there.

Anything below 70c is fine. But obviously, the lower the temp the better.

Also, you need to remember that airflow in the case and ambient temps play their part.

The CPU no longer makes a noise, but the whole system cuts out after around 2 minutes..

Has the fan stopped spinning?

The fan spins while there is power, but stops when the power cuts.

Have you tested the temps yet as Alex suggested?
Sounds to me(though this is a bit of a jump)that the PC was overheating from the start,making the fan spin like crazy and make all that noise,now something worse has happened by the looks of it.

By the way, I have just built this and this is the first time trying to boot. Still no display.
