Default CPU running at 100%

Hi,
I have a problem which I hope someone out there can help me with.
My CPU, which is an AMD 64 Athlon runs at 100% and slows my computer down to less than a crawl. I have formatted my hard drive on several occassions and zeroed it, not sure if that is the same. The computer appears to run fine but only for a short time, CPU runs normal, then for no apparent reason the CPU starts to run at 100%. I have installed an anti-virus programme but still no luck.
It as been suggested that they may be a bad cluster on the hard drive, any ideas would be very useful.
Many thanks ,

Keith

I'd suggest it might be to do with how many processes you've got running.

Flick into task manager and list them and stop any processes you don't need.

If you need to know what a process is for have a look here:

What are the other specs of the computer?

RAM could be an issue but I'd reccomend checking HijackThis. Run it and post the results in their support forums, they'll be able to tell you if there is anything there that could be causing a problem, spyware and anti-virus software can miss things.

|MG| Free Download - HijackThis 1.99.1

It ties in with what Alex has suggested but will list things that Windows does not.

What programs do you usually have running? If you have a small amount of CPU and are using Mozilla Firefox, that could be the problem... Also, if you are using Avast! on a low CPU computer that will definitely be the problem! If you are using both on the other hand, I don't even know how you are doing it! But if you have high CPU, that changes the story! :D
