There is some difference in speed.Assume your is socket 478 P4 3.4 ghz. This CPU is based on HT, squeeze all the datas as if dual cpu virtually in execution.Pentium D 9xx dual core is based on 2 CPU core without HT. That's why no significant differences when you scale down to PD 920. The CPU just execution applications smoother not faster.Core 2 duo 6300 has a front side bus 1ghz+, but is 1.86 Ghz. Main improvement is lower wattage consumption a morph from Pentium D. Improvement are all hypes. It's Intel corporate dishonest culture. Therefore, you wouldn't see significant faster when compare to the one you have. But, when come to multi-tasking, it lots smoother. If you're thinking of upgrade to AMD Athlon X2 4000+, I personally recommended it. Just make sure it's a 65 nm fab CPU. This unit is better Energy Efficient then Intel same class e6400 at 2.1 GHz with lower price. You'll also find significant speed differences as per dollar spending wise compare to your old P4.
