Coincidently I'm using a 531 now, I've never had a problem, they were meant to be a more reliable model on the range at the time, but I guess nothings 100% reliable, least of all with Dell.

Well today was to be when they came out to fix it , called and said they would have there tech support guy there at 5:PM . And as things are with Dell he was a no show. I left at 7:30 with this guys wife on the phone with Dell. All I can say is you don't wont any small kids around when she gets mad. Or you will hear things you never knew before. And Dell did not give much help they hung up on her two times . So much for the puppys.

Dell did show up at 8:30 guy got lost and lost the phone number to my friends house and when he called Dell they would just hang up on him. He tried the new motherboard and it did not work.
To make a long story short Dell said they would just replace the computer.

Great that's really good that they will do that. Just make sure they don't erase your hard drive.

Does your friend have a Dell 531 or a Dell 531S? This makes a difference when determining certain problems.
