My Motherboard has four slots for RAM - 2 Dual Channels.

I know that if you're going to use it dual channel it must be the same - and bought in a kit to ensure it is the same batch.

But say if -
Channel 1:
2x2GB (4GB) Kit, Dual Channel

Channel 2:
2x4GB (8GB) Kit, Dual Channel

Will that work smoothly? Will I have 12GB of effective RAM (x64 of course) that works within 2 seperate Dual Channels??

Or must the be identical?
ie. 4x4GB (16GB) Kit - 2 sticks on each channel.

Thanks - I'm halfway through a build and about to buy the RAM.

I'm not sure if this is any help but my Dell came with the standard 2x512 meg strips, so I went out and bought a 2 gig kit off newegg and popped it in with the2x512 strips that was already there so I would have 3 gigs and never had any problems with it. Later I went to staples and bought a 2 gig PNY kit and replaced the 2x512 that was in there so I would have 4 gigs and still had no problems.

I take it you are going to be installing either Vista64 or XP64 ....... if not 32 bit Opersting Systems will only see about 3.25gb of Ram, so you will be wasting your cash.

Yes, I hope to be running Vista Ultimate 64 partly as I will benefit from that alone and also because I need more than 3gig of RAM.

Thanks tardster, although unfortunately that doesn't confirm it will run in dual-channel mode.. could you confirm that it does?

Ok.. I suppose if I had 16GBs of RAM it wouldn't matter to much whether it was working dual channel or not :P

Thankls for the input :D

Duel Channel is for additional RAM speeds, so there would be a difference between 16GB in duel channel, or in single channel.

Any RAM will work in any slot, so to speak.

Dual channel is where you have two matched pairs, size and speed.

Say you have 1x 1GB 400mhz and 1x 1GB 333mhz, they will run, but at the lower of the two speeds so not dual channel.

2x 1GB both 800Mhz = dual channel.

Say you have 1x 1GB 400mhz and 1x 1GB 333mhz, and 2x 2GB 800Mhz - In their paired slots the 2x 2GB 800's will run in dual, the other two unmatched pairs will not, defaulting to the lower of the pairs speed. But I may be wrong, the two matched 800 pairs may also drop down to the others lowest speed of 333.

What speeds are the RAM? Get all the same in all 4 slots and you can't go wrong, regardless of their size in MB/GB.

So with me having 4 2gig strips of 800mhz of the same brand and speed I'm running dual channel correct?
