Default Dual Core vs Quad Core - and other questions...

Hi All

I'm wanting to build my first highspec/gaming desktop.

So far, my list is;

Samsung F1 500GB Hard Drive
NZXT Lexa Blackline - Red - Case
Corsair TX 650W PSU
Corsair 4GB Kit - 800mhz
Samsung 20x DVD Drive
LG W2252TQ
Monitor - 10000:1 Contrast

Now, do I want Quad or Dual Core? I've been looking at the E8400, and the Q6600, which do you recommend, or if neither, which alternatives are there?

And Graphics,

8800GT
9800GT
or HD4850 PCS extreme?

I want to play,

COD4
Halo
SimTractor
Roller Coaster Tycoon(s) mainly number 3
Maybe Crysis
rFactor,
GRID

What would be best for me?

And if anything else in my list isn't correct for me, what should it be?

My budget is around £600+VAT (I can claim that back)

Thanks

Ben :)

22" in general is a very bad price point for monitors. 1680x1050 does neither HD res very well and for usually only a bit cheaper you can get a higher res (1920x1200) 24".

As for the spec, quad core is useless. The E8400 and 4850 is the best setup, unless you're on a budget. If you can't afford that, go from the E8400 to the E7200, and get the 4850.

You also don't need the Corsair 650 for that setup (450 will be fine) and the WD 640GB is just as fast. I've never heard of that case either..

Ahh okay, so I want a 24"? And if I want to use it for TV use, is it better to have a TV Tuner built in/USB, or get a Freeview box for the TV?

I absolutely love this! 50:000:1 Contrast! But out of my budget.

This is the cheapest I can find, which is half decent.

Cool, and I want the E8400, and HD4850? Mint. I take it the HD stands for Hi Def? So will it have a HDMI output?

Oh and PSU, this one okay?

Thanks for the help :D

Ben

*EDIT - Is this motherboard up to the job? I have been told it will be fine, but want to check. Here

I'm really not trying to be a dick, but Carbon just recently did a great tutorial on computer parts here: http://www.computer-juice.com/forums...station-18844/

I know it's simply impossible to read a website and see every thread, so I hope you take this with the good intent i intended. It's a really good assessment on computer parts and also includes the chips you are talking about.

EDIT: The chips and virtually everything else you asked about.

yeah, i actually typed up a reply last night but forgot to hit reply, so i'll summarize it:

1. i don't know, i'm not in the UK :p
2. monitor's a good choice
3. doesn't matter, the monitor hooks up via DVI-D
4. PSU's fine, see if you can get a 450W Corsair cheaper, they're almost the same unit
5. Motherboard is fine, but the DS3R is for hardware RAID, you'd probably be ok with the DS3L

Yeah, its a brilliant read, and very informative. I found it last night, a bit after I posted my reply, and then my internet went, as BT are doing some work

Anyway, I think I'm going to with the DS3L, but which one? There are 3?

Here - £62
Here
- £72
Here - £85 - But this one has RAID, and I don't need it, so one of the first two?

And I found the 450W Corsair, but its only a tad cheaper. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=CA-006-CS

Thanks Guys :)

I think Carbon meant the first of those, as it is a P35 chipset (like the one you had chosen before)

Yeah, if you can get the P43 it's probably worth it. Otherwise grab the P35.

Right, well I'll go for the P35 I think, thanks :)

I'm in the UK, as far as I can see, Newegg don't ship here, is that correct?

I've saved £150+ with them, if I can order.

Nope, you might try other UK websites like scan.co.uk though.
