Hi guys have sorted most of my new build but cant decide between two equall priced cpus, the
E8600 (or maybe the cheaper E8500) or
the Q6600
ones dual core and ones quad as u guys will know
mainly use the desktop for gaming so prob the E8600
but will i notice any difference if i get the Q6600 ?
will i get a drop in performance when gaming using the quad core as games arnt designed for it ?
(or should i get the E8500 and overclock it?)
also
should i stay with xp (have one left) and wait for the new i7
or pay for a new vista o/s?

I don't know how long you can wait - but I'm halfway through a build with the Q6600 - I'll probably have got the rest of the parts by end of Jan, so if you can wait until then I can give you a verdict.

For me though (I was faced with the same line up - along with the Q9950) it was the fact that I run so many apps simultaneously both in the background and foreground - which made me opt for a Quad.

If you are soley going to use it for gaming ie. running the game and NOTHING else I would suggest the E85/600 however if you are going to:
1)Download a game
2)Update Windows
3)Run an anti-virus
4)Burn a DVD
and 5) Play a game

all at once (obviously this is an example and the specific things you may be doing will vary) then I would suggest you chose a Quad Core.

Probably go for a E8600 then.

As for getting the cheaper E8500 and O/Cing - way I look at it why not get a E8600 and O/C it

Yeah but I mean if you were considering the E8600 anyway then its obviously not too exoensive for you or anything - so instead of thinking hmm lets save some money - i usually think lets get more for my money.

yeah - and it's you're money so you're choice.

All i was saying is that personally - my preference is to spend the same money but get more. (In this case by OCing E8600)

It just depends where you'd rather save - Financial or Performance

Get the E8500 and overclock it to 4Ghz+, It matches and beats the Q6600 OC'd at 3.6Ghz in most apps/games

The only reason to get anything other than a E8400 is more of the newer stepping is in the higher ones.

E8500 difference is $20, so it's worth it.
E8600 difference is $100+, so it's not.
