Hangs on 'Auto-detecting USB Mass Storage Devices' during boot-up...

As the title says, my computer when i first turn it on, loads the BIOS then halfway down it says:

    Auto-detecting USB Mass Storage Devices
    Device #01

And it just hangs on for what feels like forever until finally Windows XP loads (usually hangs on from 2 mins to sometimes 5!)

Would appreciate ANY help on the matter!!

    Thanks!!

What like a USB stick or something? Or something like a mouse, joystick etc?

A USB mass storage device is something like a memory stick, external hard drive, iPod...

Basically anything that can store data.

Hangs on 'Auto-detecting USB Mass Storage Devices' during boot-up...

As far as I know, a USB mass storage device was not plugged in at the time of boot up. I do have a USB memory stick which I use from time to time, but I don't have it plugged in during start-up.

    Thanks

Try disabling the detection of such devices in the BIOS.

USB mass storage devices are not needed for 99% of boot setups anyway.

Hi abrahan, the problem will most likely disappear if you disable 'legacy USB support' in the BIOS settings. I did this just for testing today to fix the same bug (in an different context). However keeping this would also switch off the USB keyboard, which is less useful. The final solution was to downgrade the USB controller in the BIOS settings from 'High Speed' to 'Full Speed'. As the computer in question is a linux server, it will not suffer from slow USB transfer rates because the Linux Kernel does it's own initialization of the USB controller during boot and thus overrides that BIOS setting (and so everything works perfectly now). No Idea what windows would do though, still it might be worth trying...
