So i
sry for the above post, i hit enter by mistake and it submitted the post and now i cant edit it and continue, so al have to continue from here.

I have an Intel p4 Northwood 2.4GHz socket 478 setup , just the other day i decide to do a small upgrade and go buy a new heatsink thinking its gonna help at least a small bit in cooling.

Well i installed it and badtimes start happening, I was getting temp readings on cpu of 70c at idle and when running 3d games i get soaring temps and unsteady temps of 90c + .

I have then tried 3 different ways of applying the thermal paste to the cpu but that didnt make it any better.

Why is a brand new copper heatsink running my temps to crazy values? i would have thought either a small decrease in overall temps and all round better vent for cpu to breathe

any ideas?

kind regards

Whats the brand of the HS and are you 100% positive you installed it correctly? may need to be re seated and could you explain how you applied the thermal paste and how much. Also have you tried re installing your old HS?

Have you look at the bottom of the heatsink, if there are any scratches this can affect the temp of the cpu?

Thanks guys for the swift replys, There is no scratches on the surface redden, and thanks for that tip :-) Well i have tried it both ways as it can only fit east to west not north to south etc, Here is more or less the exact same one here form this link, only mines has a fan speed controller

http://www.ciao.co.uk/Cooler_Master_...ooler__5813404

Yep Pete the fan is designed for my cpu , its made for socket 478 and 100% mines is socket 478 ,the thermal paste am using is the Antec Formula 5 Silver Thermal Compound, I was told that this is the best and it comes in a syringe .

I have tried covering the surface with just 1 tic tac drop of thermal paste and allowing the weight of the heatsink to compress the rest. (2) i have tried fullying covering the surface with a nice layer of paste (3) am not so sure about this one as i read this froma forum but.... I put small amount on then used a blade to lighty spread the paste accross the surface so it was really very thin contact with both surfaces.

Atm i have reverted back to default heatsink and have applied the thermal paste as from method 1 i just said about and it works great, well works as it should at around 50c ok for Intel i think, but wish it was a little lower , is why i decided to buy the new one in the first place :-)

I maye try again tonight some tips you guys just said, ony thing i can try is setting it around each way again to see if that helps, but i think i already did that.

regards
