Default help Identifying unknown RAM sticks

Hey guys, been a while, been really busy, glad to see all the new members and the raffle went well.

So I got this random PC from someone, so I took apart a couple machines laying around looking for extra RAM to throw in it, but I have no idea how to identify what kind/speed/amount of RAM is on each stick. I have three sticks and I was wondering if there was any repository where I could search for numbers found on the RAM. Any sort of direction would be well appreciated! Thanks.

what?
The sticks are not in a computer, I want to identify them before sticking them in.

Yes, I obtained 3 sticks of RAM from non-working computers.
How to identify them via markings on the sticks, would be great, given they don't have stickers on them anymore. Thanks for the effort.

DDR from DDR2 is tricky (unless you like counting 240 pins). If you have a newer computer with a DDR2 motherboard, try seeing if the notches line up - if they do, the RAM is DDR2, if not, it's DDR.

From there, it gets difficult. There's no real way to check externally the RAM's speed. Thankfully, as long as you have the right general type (DDR vs DDR2), you can go ahead and stick it in the PC then check the speed in the BIOS or with a tool in Windows. Higher speed memory than is supported by the motherboard will automatically lower its speed, and lower speed will work fine.

all right, yeah these are all old enough to definitely NOT be DDR2. Unfortunate about the lack of external markings.. I guess I'll throw them into a dell I have sitting around, and see what they show up as, one at a time. Hopefully one of them is 256 so I can bump that free computer I scored up to 512 and throw ubuntu on it for fun.
Thanks Carbon

Default help Identifying unknown RAM sticks

ddr wont fit into ddr2 slots, ive tried, the gap doesn't align

putting in the wrong ram wont do harm your computer just wont start up

you could stick them in and then run a crucial scan on your working computer

if it starts up that is
