Hey, I'm new to this and don't really have much of a clue about anything. - So I need your help and please be patient with me! I'm planning on upgrading my RAM as at the moment it's a pathetic 512mb DDR2 SDRAM. It is 533MHz (although I don't know what that means) and PC2 - 4200 (I don't know what that means either) I was wanting 2gb just to get me by but wasn't sure what I need to look for to ensure it's compatibale with my motherboard. I imagine there are some speeds or characteristics of memory that i need to keep constant with my old RAM. Also, if I do buy 2gb RAM, can this be inserted in addition to my old RAM? or does it need to be replaced if it's not same company? capacity? etc. Please help as I am clueless!!

Ram (Random Access Memory) is what I would call lets say a "temporarily storage" 533mhz is the data tranfer speeds. measured (per sec) Pc4200 is the name given to the chip. (I dont Know why) Depending on your motherboard will depend on how much ram you are able to install and how many ram slots there are. Because your motherboard accepts DDR2 means it can run Dual channel. to make use of dual channel .eg 2x slots, 2x 1gb chips = 2gb dual channel or 2x slots, 2x 512mb chips = 1gb dual channel. Personally I would ebay your 512mb stick and have alook at these http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=8&subcat=697 But this will depend on how much ram the motherboard can accept. If you can get your motherboard model and google it or go to the manufacturers website, it will tell you exactly how much ram your board can accept... Off the top of my head and it being ddr2 I think it would be able to take 2gb. but dont take my word for it. Hope this may help a little..

To be on the safe side, I would replace them with pc4200 because you know they will work. Higher speed ram for example Pc5300 /ddr2 667mhz are dependant upon the motherboard. If you could tell me the make and model of the pc or the make and model of the motherboard I will gladly find out for you.

Completely depends on the motherboard you have. Do you know what motherboard you have. If so go to the manufactorers website and it should tell you, or post it here and I'll look for you

on the motherboard it says MC410m ms-7173 All I know about it is that it's an MSI and it's not the highest value. I'm even considering replacing the motherboard but I really don't know where to start. there are lots of problems with this PC! constantly freezing - especially during gaming or google earth. When it freezes it holds the tone that was currently coming out the speakers. The CPU fan etc is still running and all i get is the continuous tone from the speakers. Given the symptoms I suspected it was the Graphics card but thought I'd look into getting RAM first as it's cheaper and it'll generally help the computer.

Chances are the reason its freezing is due to the fact you have onboard vga. If you do decide to upgrade in the future the new memory "if you buy them" will come in handy. The motherboard you have at the moment is very limited to what you can upgrade. Your best bet is to start a fresh. Try your own build, there lots of people on here willing to help you. If your wanting to go intel, speak to Dave Hybrid he seems well clued up aswell as others on here, they will guide you every step of the way. and it would work out cheaper + plus you know whats inside.
