My old dell desktop originally came with a Pentium 4 1.76 GHz processor. It is a Socket N (478 pin) processor with a 400FSB

i would like to know if it is possible for me to upgrade the processor to an intle p4 3.4ghz which is also 478 pin and if my motherboard will be able ot handle it. it has a 250w psu. i am a newbie to uphrading computers so i would apprecate any good help, btw i hae no idea which motherboard my pc has, i have tried various internet sites but have found no sucessful results so i would be greatful if someone could find out whihc motherboard my dell dimension 4300 pc has.

Thanks!

As far as I recall you will find that the 3.4GHz processor will be either 800MHz FSB or Prescott core, not Northwood, therefore incompatible! You may be able to manage a 2.8GHz processor.
