Default How To Select A Motherboard

Hello,

I have selected components for my computer but I don't know how to select which motherboard will work well with it. So far I have:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Quad Core Processor LGA775 Kentsfield 2.40GHZ 1066FSB 8MB Retail Box

BFG GeForce 8800GTS 650MHZ 512MB 1.94GHZ DDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I HDCP HDTV Out Retail Video Card

G.SKILL F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ PC2-8000 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-1000 CL5-5-5-15 240PIN Dual Channel Memory Kit

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 3.5IN 500GB SATA2 8.5MS 7200RPM 32MB Cache NCQ Hard Drive

In the future, maybe next year, I am planning to upgrade my RAM to 8Gb. I was also thinking of tossing in another 8800GTS.

I am also wondering if a 700PSU will be sufficient to run my rig with duel 8800GTS.

Any suggestions will be greatly appciated.

Well, if your going SLI as you said you might, you will want a motherboard with a Nvidia chipset, 780i is the best you can use with that setup (the 790i is only compatable with DDR3 RAM) And I would recomend a PSU higher than 700W for SLI, this is due to when you are sunning SLI, your 700W PSU will be running nearly at 100%, meaning the PSU will be producing alot of noise and heat, however increasing the rating of the PSU will reduce those.

its best to decide on a motherboad right after you choose the processor u want. your cpu is compatible for a 775 slot. so, when looking on a website for mobos. generalize the options with 775 slot.

Going 4GB to 8GB it is unlikely you will see a massive change in performance.

If you are not desperate to go SLI why not get a board that is both DDR2 and DDR3 compatible, as there is there room for upgrading to DDR3 in the future.

(I say not desperate to go SLI as i don't believe there is a board that is SLI and is both DDR2 & DDR3 compatible)

What is your budget for this board?

If you don't want SLI I would go with a P35 board.

For SLI a 780i board is probably the way to go.

780i has some problems - excessive heat on northbridge and BIOS/driver headaches, usually. But it's not a bad chipset overall.
