Hey guys,
I'm going to be building a new computer soon but my plans changed when I found out I could get the following processor for free Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad Core QX9750 Specifications: * Quad-core * 45nm * 3.16Ghz * 1333Mhz FSB * 12MB L2 Cache * Socket-775 I'll be spending a fair amount of money just to build the computer, so I want to be sure this is a good processor to build around. I would like to know how this processor stacks up against what's out there today. Also, what would you guys recommend for a motherboard, RAM and power supply? Many Thanks! |

It's 771, server socket. It's a $1500 processor, I have no idea how you'd get it for free but sell it for half that and use it to finance your entire build with a newer processor that's 775.

Alright, I'm a little confused now.
I've heard conflicting reports on what socket this thing is. It's between a 771 or 775. The attached screenshot says its a 775, but the following story says its a 771. http://hardwarezone.com/articles/vie...9&id=2745&pg=2 Does anyone know for sure? |

I'm with you wild man. When I googled it last night, I kept coming up with conflicting information. Some said 1333 FSB and some said 1600. LOL, when I went to Intel.com and typed QX9750 into their site search engine it came back with no results, yet I found it under processors. I don't know what to tell you. The only thing I found out for certain is that it's a "rare" chip as they didn't make many, and it is EXPENSIVE.

It's a 775 socket by the looks of the info I've found. Get a 1600FSB board and you cant go wrong. Even if it's a 1333FSB chip, you have the overclocking room there.

Razer, thanks for the knowledge.
Do you have a motherboard you could recommend for this chip? Also, would you go with a fan or water cooling unit for the CPU? |

Just sell it. There is no reason to build around a 65nm quad just because it's expensive. That's a reason to sell it.

Yeah, it's a 45nm Quad Carbon, sorry dude.
The QX (Quad eXtreme) series have unlocked multipliers and as such are brilliant for over clocking and tweaking from what I hear. You could sell it though and get an I7 920 or 940 which for stock and probably over clocking would be much better. |
