I have MS windows XXP SP2
Intel Xeon CPU 2.40GHz, 1.0GB ram, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200, and it's a work station.

Can I upgrade my ram with Kingston (2) 2GB DDR2 chips?
Someone before had mentioned I needed a differnt type.

Please advise if these will work or if I need a differnt type.

Thanks in advance

There are multiple types of RAM. DDR2 533, DDR2 667, DDR2 800, DDR2 1066, DDR2 1333...you get the picture.

And on top of that, there are also different sizes of chips. You know the little gold teeth at the bottom of the memory? They count those and base the fit on those as well. There are 184 pin, and 240 pin.

My guess is that since your computer is fairly new, it has 240 pin type of RAM. But from there, I'm stuck. Unless you can give me some other information about your system and what type of RAM you bought for it, I can't help you further. We need to know your exact motherboard model. If you don't know that, then give a model. Such as Dell Inspiron 6000, or Toshiba Satellite or something to that effect. From there we should be able to figure things out better.

Since you're running (one hell of) a workstation, 240PIN DDR2 won't work. You'll need RDRAM: ECC PC800 RDRAM, to be precise. Unfortunately, you can only go up to 2GB..and it isn't cheap. For the price of 2GB of that RAM, you could likely buy a new computer..but probably not a dual-processor workstation.

Yep, Carbons right. Its goign to be an expensive upgrade lol.

The reason for it is that your 'workstation' is actually running on server hardware thats designed to last forever and run 24/7/365.

Best bet would probably to sell it and buy a new desktop, or scavenge around on eBay for some of the stuff Carbon mentioned or similar, and check with us that it will fit before you buy it.

Your workstation sold in '02 for over $6000.

Now you could probably sell it for around $1k+, it holds its value better as a server/workstation than a desktop would.

Probably. I don't know how the market goes for that sort of setup but I imagine it'd be quite a treat for someone looking for a cheap server. Hell, $300's even not bad for a regular desktop, much less with dual processors. You could probably even make more than that parting it out.

Who was it made by and what model no. is it?

I'd say you should be able to get at least $750 to $1000 depending on its condition.
