| When overclocking there are a few things that have to be taken into account, although the chip itself is important its not the only important factor. The degree that you can overclock a chip depends on each individual chip itself. Therefore 2 people can have the same model chip and one person may get a high overclock and the other may find that their chip may not overclock by much at all.

Motherboards are very also important. Some motherboards, such as Intel motherboards, will not let you overclock at all, no matter what your chip is (overclocking is not in Intel's interest - they want you to buy new faster chips, not make the existing one faster!). There are other factors too, such as cooling and RAM speed that have to be taken into account as these will affect the the size of the possible overclock and the performance of your computer afterwards. I suggest that you look for an overclocking guide (there are lots around if you google) especially ones related to the motherboard that you are using or planning to use. This will help you to find out if your motherboard is good for overclocking or not. To get the best overclock though you may want to get better cooler than the intel stock. Though some can be expenisive others are quite inexpensive and perform better than intel stock e.g. Freezer 7 Pro. Hope this helps My System: The Elephant

The majority of cpu's are top-locked so the overclock isn't simply down to the cpu. You really need a strong overclocking motherboard to get the best out of a cpu, any cpu. A good bios doesn't hurt either. If you're going to be using stock cooling though I'd be going for the lowest rated C2D cpu you can get, as that will give the cooler that much more cooling headroom to deal with the overclock. As stated above though, I'd be thinking twice about using the stock cooler. Not through lack of prowess (I believe it's good for 3ghz) but simply for noise levels. If it was me? (and I was sticking to stock cooling) I'd be going for the Pentium E2140 or E6320/E6420. But considering the price disparagy between the E6*** and the new E6*50, I'd be going for the E6550.
