Just a thought I had recently. Let's say you have a Core 2 Duo and 3.00GHz (E8400) and you had a Core 2 Quad at 3.00GHz (Q9650) would the Quad core beat the Dual core in gaming? Assume price is out of the question, they're both 45 nm, both 3 GHz, Both have 2 cores that are available to run games..

When you throw price back into the equation, the Quad core is significantly more expensive of course and would give less price:performance but if you wanted something that would blitz a game, say Crysis then render videos of you playing Crysis, would the quad core come out on top?

They would be roughly equal in most games, including Crysis, and the E8400 would have a lot more room to overclock and therefore beat the quad. If you're doing rendering too obviously the quad would win but I'm not sure it's quite fair to throw that in too :)

Well for an average gamer, they'd probably go with the dual and just play games. Just something that's puzzled me since it's like having and E8400 for games then another E8400 for doing everything else.

Perhaps if you could limit the OS to 2 cores and the game to the other 2 cores you'd have some serious performance and can justify the purchase of a £1200 I7..

Or just buy a i5 750 and enjoy performance exceeding both for a little more than the E8400 :)

That sounds like a plan lol. When I get some cash I'll be getting an I5 I guess, run my not particularly old system as a server or something.

Turns out the I5's are going to sell like crazy then?

If they are as good as they seem to be, what parts would you recommend? I only need the RAM, mobo and I5 750.. I5 in UK is just over £150 which is a fantastic price. If I can get a single PCI-e 16 lane and a PCI slot or 2 with enough space for 8Gb DDR3 I'd be quite chuffed

You can go pretty cheap and grab a i5, P55M-UD2, and 4GB of DDR3 and get a pretty great system. P55-UD3L is the one if you want more slots and a traditional ATX form factor, but since P55 is just a massive southbridge, it's not too bad of an idea to consider a microATX motherboard (unlike before)

And yeah, they're selling like crazy which is good, because they're legitimately good chips. A little pricey compared to what we're used to, but no more so than Wolfdale + P45-UD3L back in the day. If you're doing any sort of quad-threaded work, it's the best step up from a Wolfdale system, and if you're on a 65nm C2D, it's also a great bet.
