looking at your system spec on your other thread, yes it will support 64bit.

Performance wise? you get an increase because of the amount of Ram you can use, and a small jump because of other things i believe.

Some software doesn't work with 64bit, but almost all does now.

Only real issues is with things like older printers scanners or other devices. Most have 64bit drivers available, but not all. worth checking before you upgrade!

I'm not sure how to answer this lol. Last March, when I built this computer, (I have Vista Ultimate 64 and 8GB's RAM), it was a real pain in the rump sometimes to get drivers that were WHQL signed for 64 bit Vista. I don't seem to have as much trouble now though as I did. I don't know if it's because more companies have come on board with the 64 bit Vista, or if I've just gotten accustomed to it. I do know that some software will NOT work with 64 bit, but it usually if something works with 32 bit, it will work with 64 bit. 64 bit has a folder called Program files(X86) in which it installs 32 bit programs. Not all of them will so you need to check on an individual basis.

Note: Vista64 is VERY picky about having WHQL signed drivers.

It is noticeably faster, yes.

(Note, I didn't say extremely faster, I said notcieably, you will notice it, bu it's not phenonemal.)

And since Windows first released an x64 OS it has used an emulator they call WoW64, so applications can install in a secondary Program Files Folder, called Program Files (x86)

Most drivers will too, except the odd one that needs direct port access, and can't because it's being emulated.

Although these days it's rare, and if you google the specific case theres usually a way round it.

EDIT
Sorry, didn't see Bubba's post.

Wow, you sound so scientific, almost like you know what you are talking about lol. Emulators, direct port access....... you lost me at hello..........

I ran XP, Win 7 32 bit, and Win 7 64 bit on my system (see sig) the 64 bit was as fast as my tweaked XP but the Win 7 32 was dragging just like Vista did when I installed it then deleted the partition. And it saw the full 4 Gig of Ram, if I go with Win 7 down the road I will bump the memory up to 8 or 12 Gig (I am not about to take out the two 2 Gig memory modules so it will be two more 2 Gig or two 4 Gig modules, unless I build a new system... :) )

If I go for Win 7 it will be the 64 bit, not just because of the compatability but the ram - 'Mo Ram, 'Mo Ram!

The install and drivers for the 64 bit was almost flawless, the 32 bit had probems with some drivers. And the programs I installed with the 64 bit I only had two with compatablity issues where as the 32 bit had over six compatablity issues.

So like 4D(Fordy(Ford) I think the emulator for the 64 bit may be older that Vista, like the old WoW16 that came with NT and Win2000.

And now that the RC is about to die off I only have it installed on VM Ware emulators to test with, no longer installed as Dual Boot.

The RC isn't dying. The beta is. The RC lasts for another year.

If you are going to go through the trouble of formating and reinstalling your OS why not use Windows 7 (RC) 64Bit?

I loaded it up in a VM Ware emulator and only had two really old programs come up with compatability problems.

Where as with Vista almost every non MS program I tried to load failed. I think the WoW64 in Windows 7 is older thatn the one in Vista, now this may change when Windows 7 goes in to retail production but at this time it works.,

A thought...

Yeah, I actually learned all that scientific nonsense a few months ago questioning it myself.

So I tried it out, and that's where I discovered about emulators not having direct access to any ports
