Hi again

Just changed my CPU fan from an AVC unit to an Akasa one - both 70mm.

Turned the computer on and it beeped and a warning came up saying there was an error with the fan. Switched it off and refitted it. Turned back on and the message doesn't come up now and the fan spins.

However, just checked the CPU temperature on Speedfan and it's though the roof, 76 degrees!

Is this because the new fan has it's own temp sensor on it?

Reason I changed the old fan was cos the CPU was getting hot (but only around 55 degrees), and also the bearing felt like it was on it's way out as it felt slightly rough.

The new fan came with an adapter (3 to 4 pin) is the extra pin for the temp sensor? I haven't used the adapter.

It's definitely spinning, so why is the temp so hot?

Cheers!

Maybe you put it on the wrong way round so it is sucking the air out instead of blowing it onto the heatsink!

Well the computer just restarted (recovered from a serious error etc)

So I've just put the old fan back on, and the CPU temp is down to around 55 degrees.

The old fan also looks like it spins alot faster than the new one did, but the old one still isn't fast enough to keep the CPU cool enough.

I'm guessing I need to use the 3 to 4 pin adapter wire then? If so, where do I plug it to?

It's Intel P4 HT 530.

yeah the fan is blowing towards the cpu and is the same size as the original one.

it may be that in bios the shutdown temp of ths cpu is set too high if so then the fan will spin slowly, to keep it to the bios setting which can be as high as 70c if so reduce it
if it does have its own heat moniter this should be able to be sorted out also through bios
also try cleaning the cpu of thermo paste and refitting heatsink and fan
also take the reading of cpu temp from the bios
if its 3 pin on board use 3 pin from fan
ifs its 4pin from the board use 4 pin adapter
good luck

Thanks, that's an interesting point actually.

So how do I get into bios to reduce the temperature at which the fan spins fast?

As I've definately seen the fan spin fast before.

Surely cleaning the thermal paste off the CPU would have a bad affect?

And yeah I had the new fan in before using the standard 3 pin connector. Will the new fan's temp sensor still work just by using the three pin connector then? I was wondering if the 4 pin connector was for the fan's temp sensor (as the old fan didn't appear to have one on it)

Thanks

hi with most m/bs if u push the delete button on start up youll get into bios especially if a self build otherwise will need to know what system you have to get into bios
once there go to pc health monitor/check and enter, find the shutdown temp for the pc and lower it
this will make the fan spin faster to cool it to below your new settings
with the thermo paste i meant to say try clean the old off and fit new paste
and it should be ok to just use the 3 pin instead of 4 as your m/b is a bit old
