Thanks, just been into BIOS and brought the CPU target temperature down from 75 degrees to 60 degrees (the lowest option - the highest was 90 degrees!)

Something I noticed while in there (but left alone as I wasn't sure I should tamper with it) was the CPU fan ratio. It's currently at 35% but could be as low as 20% or as high as 60%. Or set to Auto.

What is it though?

this doesn't answer the question you just asked, but i just wanted to point out that Speedfan has been NOTORIOUSLY unreliable. and none of the other posters really brought this up. i think it's important to bring this to light as speedfan could be showing you very inaccurate temperatures. they could either be entirely too high or far lower than they should be.

for example, i tried speedfan at first. my current setup is an intel e6750, 2 gigs of ram, 160gig 7200rpm hard drive....fairly standard. and it was showing my cpu to be at 23 degrees Celsius. there was NO WAY that could be true. so i downloaded CoreTemp, and it showed it to be actually closer to 39 degrees Celsius.

if i were you, i might make the switch between the two programs, or get both and compare the temperatures you're getting. who knows? perhaps you never even had a problem to begin with. or you really DO have one now, and all you're doing is making it worse.

definitely worth a double-check.

Thanks, that's the sort of reply I was originally hoping for - I did lose trust in the accuracy of the temperature readings when I saw one called Aux reading like 148 degrees

Have you got a link for CoreTemp?

Ta mate.

it was originally hosted in our downloads section right here at CJ, but i think as a result of the admin and mods wanting to have it cleaned out and update, the link in there is gone. so here's an alternative:
http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

since you have an intel core, it should work. i'm not entirely sure if it works for the p4. i just know that it doesn't work with reeeeaaalllly old intel models like the older celerons.

you could always try putting oil in your bearings (in the old fan) just peal pack the sticking on the fan , this helped me it reduced my temp by 4 degrees and seemed to spin a little faster but this is comming from a novis in the world of computers but every little helps ps excuse my poor grammar and hope this helps

Link590o is right on the money about the whole speedfan thing, i needed to speed up my cpu fan a tad so i thought i would download it. The next minute the damn thing is saying the core temp is 129 degrees!!! Rushed to turn my comp off as you'd expect, restarted a few seconds later as i thought it was fishy that it could get soo hot in a matter of seconds, went into the bios and hey presto idle at 27c. Word of caution for speedfan.... If your gonna use it make sure you have a second app that shows the true cpu temps, perferably hardware monitoring software that comes with the board itself :)
