it's working now anyway,

put it back together again tonight, played around with the front panel

applied arctic silver 5 as per the a s website (small bit the size of a grain of rice in the middle and then put the heat sink fan straight on).

just installed windows, then the motherboard drivers and graphics driver.

i left it for a bit and then installed everest to check my temps, i am on (degrees C):
Mobo: 51
cpu: 51
cpu diode: 36
hdd(i think) 29

cpu and mobo were about 55 or 56 degees c for a bit before.
do the mobo and cpu temps seem high? should i have put more than a grain of rice sized bit of arctic silver 5 on?
the gpu seems pretty low but the cpu and mobo seem pretty high to me for idle temps.

With it being a P4 (they run hot anyway) I'm not overly concerned re the temps, especially if you're using the default Intel cooler. But I'd like to see them about 10c cooler.

Also, the hsf, t.i.m and cpu will need time to make a bond.

Did you spread the arctic silver around the top of the cpu yourself or just put a dollop in the centre and then connect the hsf?

10c cooler would be nice,

i just put a small dollop (size grain of rice) and put the heat sink straight on.

this is what was recommended for my cpu on the as5 website.

i am using the intel hsf.

If it was me I'd be looking to ensure the the t.i.m was covering the whole of the top of the cpu.

If it's been on longer than 48 hours though and you do split the seal you'll be wise to remove the t.i.m and re-apply. Not a big job considering you've already done it once but its something you need to be aware of.

The hdd temp is fine, nothing wrong there.

As you are using the reference hsf though you might want to invest in an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 pro, about 15 quidlies. You'll see temps dropping then.

Case airflow setup good? (intake,exhaust fans?)

Lastly, I'd be more inclined to believe the temp probe temp you quote as it's 'nearer the action' . Everest, for all its use, is still only software. But if you're still concerned have a go at the above.

i think i may take off the hsf to checkit and then reapply as5.
does the Gpu temp seem cold to you? my brothers geforce 7500le is always about 60 degrees at least

my 6600gt is much cooler 36 or 37


i was going to ask what hsf you recommend, is the arctic cooling the best one, how much cooler would it be?

also, how do i use the temp probe?

oh yeah, i've got a front and rear fan so intake should be ok i reckon, just thought they were slow for the heat that was being produced

Hi Buchanan.

Didn't see your previous post, apologies.

Regarding the AC7. I had a X6800 (2.93ghz) core 2 overclocked and overvolted using a AC7 and the cpu never went over 45c. At stock speeds/volts I was seeing mid to high 30's.

P4's as said earlier do run hotter than core2's mhz for mhz but the above should be a clear indicator. You won't regret getting the AC7.

The 965 on your board is passively cooled so the intake and exhaust fans you have will move cool air over these heatsinks, so don't worry about this. You can purchase active cooling fans for the north and southbridges on the board but these will be noisy 40mm fans, that will of course, in time, fail. Stick with the stock cooling, save some noise and money and hassle.

Regarding the temp probe. There isn't a definitive answer to this. Just try and place it as close to the cpu as possible. Some people put it under the pcb, directly under the cpu socket. Some people put it between the hsf and the cpu. I don't recommend this personally as you're breaching the seal between the two.

If you want to get more powerful case fans, (and they're of the 120mm variety), get Zalman ZM-F3's. They're about 6 quid and run off a 12v line. They are quite loud at 12v but you do get a resistor with each fan to reduce the voltage to 7.5v. At this voltage/speed I've not come across a fan with better balance between air volume and noise.

got the freezer 7 today, any tips for installing it? i think the instructions are telling me to take the fan off before i fit it, sound right?

There's absolutely no need to take the fan off for installation. It's quite fiddly to remove the first time anyway.

Just make sure the unit is connected with the fan pointing toward the airflow.

Using the standard airflow setup as an example (intake fan at the front, exhaust at the back of the case) you'd have the hsf mounted with the fan facing the front of the case.
