Thanks for the comments re the new build. I'm still tinkering with components though.

From your reply he doesn't have either a case intake or exhaust fan (?)

If so he gpu's fan is using the ambient air in the case to cool the gpu, which as you state is running around the 40c mark. And with said fan(s) only being 70mm then they're not going to shift much air.

If that's the case then I'm not surprised by the temps.

Case manufacturers usually only fit side panel mounts for fans for one of two reasons; 1) For the bling effect. 2) Because they're thoughtful enough to as they recognise the case layout might just need one for the gpu and any other pci components.

Yeah, swap out the intel hsf for the AC7. I think we've proved it works.

Heh, yeah. Took me nearly a week to get over it. Still, being told to "Get a new one, money no object" kinda alleviated the pain. Shame though, I'd tinkered with that one for weeks and had it running just how I wanted.

Did save a couple of other bits as well, like the Zalman heatpipe cooler for the hdd and the M-cubed fan controller. Which I'm happy about as those two alone cost nearly £100.

i may well do

right now i have the one 70mm fan, waiting on the mounts

should i stick it on the side window to cool the gpu a little or go ahead and put it at the rear (the case has no front or rear fans).

i was going to put it on the back

As the other component temps appear to be fine then I'd mount it on the side panel to help cool the gpu. It'll be close to it and give it a steady supply of cooler air. The fan might also help ambient temps reduce.

Another thought is to get a new case and just transplant the build into it.

Its not as fast at stock speeds as my old one. I originally had an E6400 (dual core, 2.13ghz) then got a X6800 extreme (dual core 2.93ghz) second hand off a pal.

So from a mhz standpoint it's not as good at stock speeds. But it is a quad so it's future proofing the cpu as much as possible. Plus the mobo I'm getting will help any oc.

The X6800 had an unlocked multiplier making oc'ing easier but just raising the multiplier isn't the most beneficial way to overclock a system as it just oc's the cpu not the rest of the build. So I won't miss the unlocked multiplier as i'm going to oc the new cpu by upping the fsb (front side bus), which is exactly what I did on the X6800.

i'll try that, just looked at the fan again and don't know if i'll be able to fit it to the window with mounts but i'll try or maybe get another one for the side window.

my brother likes his case (x galaxy bubble light), cheap and flimsy but it's nice to see that all the fans work without opening it

seriously tho, don't think he'd want to spend money on a case so prob just try a couple fans,

the case window fan hasn't worked since i bought it, the guy i bought it from said it worked for him but he took it out for noise, never worked for me though, only the led works

Antec 900. Seriously good case and quite cheap.

I doubt you'd then need to replace the cpu cooler and save a few quid on fans, overall it will only cost you/him around £45-£50.

Other than that, yeah, just mount the side fan if you can. Alternatively you could just take a drill to the side panel, drill holes 120mm or so apart (you'd have to measure) and mount a 120mm case fan. Much quieter than a 70mm and will shift about double the amount of air.

Sounds like the guy who sold you the case was fibbing a little bit.

really?

thought that case was £90-100, nice, i'm liking the look of all those fans

i know, but i can't be bothered with him, rather just sort it out myself properly. the pc didn't cost too much and it seems pretty good after a few hassles when i got it
