What actually limits the amount of RAM a system will take? I know the actual number of memory slots on the motherboard is one factor. What about the Operating System? Does it have a bigger influence?

The Motherboard dictates the amount of ram in GB, todays Motherboards are around 8 to 10 GB but Windows XP can only see up to 3GB "unless Memory Remapping is enabled" Ram slots are usually 2 or 4.

I'm thinking of getting 4gb of RAM. Is Memory remapping complicated?

Just get vista.

I'm thinking you only really need 4gb of ram to play DX10 games, which are vista only.

O ok. Thanks. I'm not so keen with Vista at the moment, with the glitches, I might have 2gb, and wait a bit. Thanks for the advice

WindowsXP or Vista 32-bit will not register the full 4GB PAE. Its the drawback on both OS's. You need to either use the WindowsXP or the Vista 64-bit OS in order for 4GB to register. The max amount of memory that can be addressed in the 32-bit OS is 3GB.
