What is the maximum RAM allowed? I have read that it is under 4GB, but there are also some, more than one source, who have mentioned that it is merely a display error and it does utilize RAM above 4GB. I currently have 8GB of RAM, wondering if I should ...

I currently have 8GB of RAM, wondering if I should get xp 64 bit instead. I would much rather stay with xp 32 bit.

XP 64-bit is trash. If you do anything, go with Vista or 7 x64.

~3.5GB is usable by programs in 32.

Yep .... definitely stay away from XPx64, it's a pile of ****.

I'm running Vista Ultimatex32 with 4gb Ram and it picks up 3.25GB, although this figure may vary slightly, as Carbon says, it will never use more than 3.5GB

Out of curiosity, why is vista x64 better than windows xp pro x64?
I used vista 32 and absolutely disliked it.

When x64 XP was released, nothing really used x64, so a lot of stuff (better now, but still bad) isn't compatible.

As all the other people have said you will be limited to those 3gbs of ram. Its hard for me to recommend what to do with windows 7s release around the corner. If I were you and didn't need all 8 gigs at the moment. Stick with your xp 32 bit os and you should be fine unless you are a power user. I hope that helps.

xp pro is @@@@ and will only utilise up to 3.5 meg ram and that goes for xp/vista 32 bit so I would go for vista 64 bit or m7 64 as that will recognise all the ram
