I just bought the RAM from a shop that's pretty reliable so I hope it isn't broken..

In RAM port 1 I have the new 1gb stick, port 2 i have a 512Mb stick, ports 3 & 4 have a 256Mb stick in each of them. Any help on this is really appreciated guys!

Try removing all the RAM sticks and insert just the new stick, trying varous slots ..... if this doesn't work, then it is likely that either the stick is bad or incompatible, as torjancolin said.

there is a boot disk you can boot to and you can do a memory scan and it will tell you if if have any faulty ram sticks. http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
download and burn with (magic iso) free download of google search. burn at the slowest speed possible

Yeah, the stick on it's own works, along with my other sticks it doesn't. Whatever combination of stick I put in, I can only get a max of 1gb of RAM. I know my motherboard can support more cos I used to have 1.25 before the last stick broke on me.

The new stick works and is in good condition, the BIOS and CPU-Z tell me it's there and fine but Task manager and the System icon in control panel say I have 1Gb only..

MSI is the make, model is MS-7041.

Crucial says the max RAM capacity for the motherboard is 4Tb but it wasn't an exact match so I'm assuming it meant 4Gb.

The RAM is made by "Team" and is a 1Gb DDR PC-3200 module (400MHz if you prefer)

Ok .... not a lot of info available for that mobo .... was it a Medion Pc or something .... if so it may be custom to them.

Anyway it looks like it can handle 4gb as you say and it should be fine with the Ram you have.

Try going ionto bios and check the settings for Ram Detection and if necessary set it to Auto .... see if this helps.

The speed detection was set to Auto and that didn't help.

The BIOS says it's there and working, it's Windows that's saying it isn't there.. The BIOS is also very very limited, no overclocking tools or anything like that.

The PC was made a long time ago (In the beginning.. =P) by Ei Systems who seem to have mislaid their website..

The mobo is old and crap, featuring a 96Mb Intel chipset (82865G) and came with 2 256Mb Samsung sticks at 400 MHz, I added a ValueRAM 512Mb a year or so ago and as I go to add this new stick it just seems to ignore the fact it's there unless I put the new stick in on it's own.

Hmmmm. the only other thing you could try is .... install the 1gb in Slot 1 and the 512mb in Slot 3 ....i.e. alternate slots. You shouldn't have to, but it looks like the Ram doesn't wannna play nice with each other.
