Okay so i'm going to go pick up the cooler and the thermal paste, but the isopropyl, the computer store does not have. Will any rubbing alcohol work?

NEVERMIND... the local drug store has them according to the pharmacy department.
Wish me luck guys!

Good luck and yes, any rubbing alcohol should work, you basicly just need a good cleaner (without all these chemicals) and don't forget the cloth.

I've been told cotton swabs (q-tips) work really well.

I would trust the Real temp and ignore the speed fan. I used the nVidia utility and it was showing temps 10-15 degrees higher than my BIOS and then Real Temp when I got it.

LOL I like your new avatar.

I saw a product on the arctic silver site that is supposed to get rid of that junk. I've been meaning to ask Carbon about it. If you read this Carbon, please speak up.

Yeah i thought the Avatar was a bit fitting considering the situation i'm in :P

So got the fan, but they were out of Artic Silver.

So here are my questions now:
1. Can i still install the new fan for now? (It has the generic thermal paste on it)
2. Should i still clean the CPU or should i let the stuff that was there from before be on it for now?
3. Can i apply the paste with my finger or should i use a rubber glove??

Thanks once again.

I can't answer the rubber glove question except to say I wouldn't do it. But what do I know lol. I cleaned MY CPU with my finger when I installed my CPU cooler. God only knows what damage I did there........

Short answer to the other question. Not only no but HELL NO. Get some arctic silver 5. I don't care what part of east bumfrick Canada you live in but SOMEONE has to sell some Arctic Silver 5. You have been experiencing some major over heating issues, that a few think may have been caused by your thermal paste. Order it on line if you have to. Wait two days to save your chip, unless you have an iron clad warranty that will replace a fried chip. I, lol, DO have an ironclad warranty so in about 8 months I'm going to overclock until I smell smoke. better yet, wait until Carbon replies and follow whatever instructions he gives. If he misses this thread PM him and ask him.

Hold out until you can get some good thermal paste. Scrap the Q-tip idea, you'll end up with cotton all over the HSF, use a coffee filter.

Haha alright, i'll wait for the Artic Silver 5 then.
I'll have to track it down.

Thanks for the pointers.

And CARBON, is it cool to apply the paste with my finger??

You shouldn't need to. The HSF should spread it out evenly.
