Hello all I wonder if any one can help. I have a Abit KD7 motherboard with a Athlon 2000, running off a Chieftec 360W PSU. On the weekend there was a funny smell...., on investigation is seems to be the PSU. The machine will now not boot with the PSU, I have borrowed another PSU and the machine boots still but there are some problems. The machine will not always respond to the case switch. On investigation the motherboard seams not to like one of the DIMM's some of the time, some times it doesn't like both of them. I have managed to get the machine to boot and have run memtes68+ for 7+hrs with out error, so I think that the two DIMM's are OK. The way that I have found that allows me to boot the machie (some times) is. 1. Turn on PSU 2. Click case switch (you hear a humming from motherboard) 3. Pull out PS/2 keyboard (machine will now power up) This works some of the time but not always. This method works more reliably with only one DIMM installed. But then again some times I can't get the board to powerup with no DIMM's installed. I have upgraded the BIOS and reset with the motherboard jumpers. I can't think of any thing else to do. I'm guessing that my motherboard is knackered but its really annoying because, when the machine does boot there are no problems with it at all. If any one could provide some advice/guidance that would be most appreciated. Thanks

| When a PSU goes it's not uncommon for the motherboard to go also, the symptoms point at that.

On the plus side... a replacement Abit KD7 wont be that expensive... on the downside, they'll be hard to find. Grab a new machine altogether mate ;) Save you the hassle.

Thanks for the info guys. Confirmed what I suspected.... A KD7 is very hard to find! I've looked for the last few days and not found one yet. There are some on Gigabyte boards on ebay but there are few with the same sort of specs as the KD7. Thanks for help!

I found a board on ebay. :-) Its a KD7-S, it has SATA and Gb LAN. Now that I have my hands on the board its not playing ball. So I'm guessing that it may be the PSU that I have borrowed. Please can some one confirm my thoughts. I have connected up the new board with: the borrow PSU same CPU same RAM same graphics card same keyboard The machine will not boot with the keyboard plugged in. It will not even boot using the convoluted method that I described in my first post. If you turn the PSU off, wait 5 minutes, remove the keyboard. The machine will boot every time on command. So my thoughts are; my original PSU died, the board was OK, I borrowed a PSU and then saw these boot problem, we diagnosed as bad motherboard. But since I'm getting very similar problems with this new board, I'm thinking that the PSU could be faulty. Or could it be the: RAM, CPU or graphics card? Some thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks
