I have inherited a partially restored Dell Optiplex GX2 and am now trying to get it to speed up a bit. Its running XP Pro but only has 128MB of ram and 114 of it being used so it's obviously slow.

I have Everest so can give any information needed but I'm not sure where to start to identify what kind of memory is installed now. And more important what to buy to replace it. I know I need a 1GB stick but I also know it's not as simple as just plugging anything into it.

As far as I can tell you need RDRAM, which pre dates SDRAM and DDR RAM.

So, it is rather expensive bought new as no one makes it anymore.

I would have a look on eBay to see if any bargains are to be had.
  • PC600: 16-bit, single channel RIMM, specified to operate at 300 MHz clock rate, 1200 MB/s bandwidth
  • PC700: 16-bit, single channel RIMM, specified to operate at 355 MHz clock rate, 1420 MB/s bandwidth
  • PC800: 16-bit, single channel RIMM, specified to operate at 400 MHz clock rate, 1600 MB/s bandwidth
  • PC1066 (RIMM 2100): 16-bit, single channel RIMM specified to operate at 533 MHz clock rate, 2133 MB/s bandwidth
  • PC1200 (RIMM 2400): 16-bit, single channel RIMM specified to operate at 600 MHz clock rate, 2400 MB/s bandwidth
  • RIMM 3200: 32-bit, dual channel RIMM specified to operate at 400 MHz clock rate, 3200 MB/s bandwidth
  • RIMM 4200: 32-bit, dual channel RIMM specified to operate at 533 MHz clock rate, 4200 MB/s bandwidth
  • RIMM 4800: 32-bit, dual channel RIMM specified to operate at 600 MHz clock rate, 4800 MB/s bandwidth
  • RIMM 6400: 32-bit, dual channel RIMM specified to operate at 800 MHz clock rate, 6400 MB/s bandwidth
PC700 or 800 appears to be the speed that would match yours.

Found some on Amazon.com. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_pc...DRAM&x=11&y=20

Your right about being expensive, but since I don't have anything invested in it yet I suppose spending $100 for a PC running XP Pro isn't such a bad deal.

If you are happy to buy used, on amazon or eBay then it appears to get much cheaper.

You could try this scanner, see if it says what sort you need for definite, I tried looking through the list, but the GX2 wasn't there (atleast from what I could see)

It's a bit confusing actually as I don't know and can't find out exactly what all the guy has done to it. The case says it's a GX1 but the scanners I have used, including the Dell utility say it's a GX2.

All I know is it now has XP Pro, and I'm pretty sure he put a new HDD in it ( a whopping 7 gig drive! ) and a cd burner. Perfect for just using the internet which is why I wanted it. He has probably updated a few things but I don't know what.
When it was new I'm sure it was a very good computer. It's an absolute dinosaur now though

Just like this but with dual disk drives.

Well if it's a GX1, you can have upto 768MB of RAM according to the crucial thing,

Thanks, that's probably a very valuable bit of info! So maybe getting a 512 stick would be a wiser (and cheaper) choice?

Module Size 128 MB (8 devices, 32 banks) <- Does this mean I have some open slots to add more sticks?

I really don't know what I'm talking about here so humor me

Wouldn't he have to have updated or replaced at least the motherboard or processor (whatever it's called) to get XP running on such old hardware?

Opps before you buy, I saw the memory frequency and thought it was CPU frequency, so it could either have a max of 768MB or 384MB, could you look in everest and see what CPU frequency it says, that's all assuming nothing else has been changed. But we should be able to see if anything been changed when we know that.
