well basically my p5n-d mobo can run 800mhz ram (ddr2) and when i overclock my processor i don't overclock ram cause of crashing etc etc.

I know this is a really noob question.
But if i buy 1066mhz ram and put it in my mobo i know it will only run at 800mhz (well i think i know lol) but then i can sync overclock my processor and ram so i can have 1600 rated FSB...and a 1066mhz ram speed. Therefore it wont crash...correct?

It's difficult to tell, because on one hand you have the hypothetical of "this RAM is OK at 533mhz FSB, but it's not going to be clocked that high for most users", and then you have the hard limit of the motherboard saying "I can't run the memory (and therefore the FSB) at anything over 400mhz". I think in this case the only way you're going to be able to test is by trying it.

You seem to be implying you don't want sync, though: 1600 rated FSB at 1:1 would be running the processor and RAM at 800mhz, but then you want 1066mhz? So in this case you want to take the RAM to a higher speed than the processor? Could you clarify a bit?

right now i have a 1680fsb so 840mhz ram and thats on a 1:1 sync but i want to do 3:2 so its in the 1000 range so i thought if i put 1066mhz ram in i could overclock it up to that.

What is the maximum the ram you currently have will do?

Personally I am sick of so called 1066 ram that is basically only 800 that needs more volts.
I have gone through plenty of sticks trying to do what you are doing, but eventually just settled on good quality 800 that I link and sync(dunno if your board can do that)this leaves it running at a puny 740 something I think but with far tighter timings.

I guess you can go for higher CPU overclock by doing what you are talking about but 1:1 ratio with everything fast(enough)and stable suits me better.

well i am completely finished with overclocking now got 425x9 FSB so 3825Mhz on an e8400 here.
My memory is corsair xms2 now running at 1:1 425. With timings 5-5-5-15 and to be honest im happy with it the way it is. i was just curious if it would work if i tried it.

lol thanks =D
nah took alot of work going above 3.6 on a p5n-d mobo is difficult it took me a while to get it up to that. It runs stable on it aswell.
But i usually just run on 3.6ghz only go up to 3.8ghz if im gonna play COD4 or benchmarking.
