Default Overclocking

Alex asked me in the CPU score thread about the temp my cpu was operating at with it pushed to 3.6ghz and using a Tuniq Tower 120.

That was a one off for me at the mo as I am still new to overclocking and am not confident enough to run that speed for long. Not sure I have my settings right, yet!

With a little help from everybody I'm sure I will be. What I am nervous about is supplying to much voltage.... I have read many articles but feel I need to know more.

Any links or advice will, as always, be greatly recieved!

I have speedfan and CPU burn in installed.

Anything else I should know/install before I really push things?

Cheers,

Keith.

Alex is having a few problems with his pc at the moment Keith and may not be online this weekend.
As you know he's the man when it comes to Overclocking, so if you will bear with for a short while it would be appreciated or if Dave can offer a tasty morsel. :)

I have only one question at the mo alex, ( due to the quality reply you posted!. And I didn't find it 'disjointed' atall! Far from it. ) Can you recommend a good trustworthy site and location to download 3dmark from please? I have visited several and am a little unsure of the authenticity of them! At my dl speed it would appear to take around 24 hours!
Thats a long time with an unknown attached!

Cheers,

Keith.

I think you might need Futuremark keith unless Alex knows different.
Are you on dial-up?

Hey up Keith. Wolfie's link is correct.

Apologies, should have made that a bit clearer.

Don't download 03, got for 05 or 06.

You'll be given a choice of a 'primary' download site or a 'mirror'. Just follow the on-screen prompts. 3dGuru is a good site for downloading it.

Many Thanks.

Here are some early results for you alex.

Running at 3.6, as I am now! I have the following using speed fan to monitor.

I have currently set the mutiplier to 360. Adjusting the CPU Core voltage it eventually booted and ran at 1.3750v.

At idle. System, 39, CPU 32.
Core 0, 37
Core 1, 37

Although I am yet to download futuremark.

I loaded Half Life 2 Lost Coast and ran the performance test. Not a good marker I know but this is what Speed Fan reported.

CPU, 49.
Core 0, 56.
Core 2, 54.

That was only with around max 65% CPU usage.

The AUX is of the scale, but as I remember this is to be discounted in most instances.

Downloading FM now..

Will let you know. :)

Thanks,

Keith.

Running at 3.6, as I am now! I have the following using speed fan to monitor. - 3.6ghz at 1.375v is good, I wouldn't recommend going over 1.4v on the cpu. You could potentially clock higher, fsb dependent. Glad to see you've a decent hsf in the Tuniq, its not my favourite air cooler but its not half bad. They can run stock P4 965 extremes which is a chip that has a TDP of 130w

I have currently set the mutiplier to 360. Adjusting the CPU Core voltage it eventually booted and ran at 1.3750v. - Nice o.c there fella, well done.

At idle. System, 39, CPU 32.
Core 0, 37
Core 1, 37 - I assume you're running the Tuniq at 2000rpm or higher? That's where my not liking it comes in; its rather loud running at peak. Decent temps, nice to see you've (obviously) got decent air cooling. If you up the ram, you might want to get some form of active cooling for it. Antec's spotcool is a good piece of kit, really cheap as well at 7.00 or so.

Although I am yet to download futuremark.

I loaded Half Life 2 Lost Coast and ran the performance test. Not a good marker I know but this is what Speed Fan reported.

CPU, 49.
Core 0, 56.
Core 2, 54. - Not bad temps, 60c under load is still ok.

After what you mentioned regarding your internet speed, forget 3dmark (if you've already downloaded-apologies). Use:

1. CPU-Z and keep it running in the background to monitor the cpu's clock speed
2. Core Temp to monitor temperature
3. SpeedFan to monitor voltages
3. Run dual instances of Prime95 in torture mode for 2 hours (replaces 3dmark)
4. Run Memtest86+ for 2hrs. (once you've got an overclock you're happy with and arn't just stress testing).

These are all much smaller downloads.

Lastly, whats the stock latency on your ram? DDR2 800 Ram with a CAS of 4 is usually good for 500mhz actual. CAS5 usually won't oc above 410mhz actual...which is pretty much useless, but at the fsb you're running it won't matter.

Downloaded 3dmark06, only took an hour with the link you recommended. I do have a bb connection although it is a bit steady at only 2.2mb.

The end result was that I had to up the core voltage to 1.4000v to get it to run correctly.

The Speed Fan results didn't change however, still similar temps reported.

Just a bit gutted with the final score which was 2340.

Gonna have to save for the 8800!!!!

I have heard reports of 11000+ for it!!!!

Keith.

Don't be too hard on yourself fella, there's always a tweak of two. Besides, half the fun is in the messing.
