First thing you have to do is see if your motherboard supports it.

Not just the mobo, you'll need a half decent bios.
If your pc is one you've purchased from a builder such as Packard Bell or Dell (etc) then you may have some problems as a lot of pc builders lock out options in the bios enabling you to overclock. For pointers, you may find this helpful
