Hi there..
I have a rather old pc (5 years old, Compaq Presario, PC-4200, DDR2 533Mhz). I just bought 2 X 1GB ram (PC2-5300, 667Mhz). When i inserted both ram into the ram slots, only 1 of them is detected. I checked from BIOS and only 1 of them is detected. Could it be the reason that because im using ram of higher speed? sorry im not very well versed in this area so i need some help.. Thanks!! |

OK ... well it should be able to handle 2gb of Ram, so either one stick of Ram is faulty or the Ram is not seated properly.
Try reseating the Ram and clean the slots (compressed air is good), if no better try removing one stick and swapping the sticks around to identify which stick is bad. |

i have tried re-seating both ram on diff slots. Both are working fine. I tried all the ways in using just 1 ram in any slots, it works jus fine.
Which means in anyway when i put 2 ram together, only 1 is detected. The new ram that i used is: Kingston KVR667D2N5/1G 1 GB PC2-5300 CL5 240-Pin DIMM Both the same. |

Well generaly speaking you should be able to use PC5200 (667mhz) in this machine, it will just work at the slower speed (533mhz).
Having said that, if bios is not detecting it properly, the only other thing I can suggest is to check whether an updated bios will resove the issue. |

Yes. I have updated the BIOS and it's still the same. Well could it be due to the fact that i have left the slot empty for quite some time??

Only if it's clogged with dust etc. .... did you give it a good clean ?
Only other suggestion would be to try swapping the Ram for PC4200, DDR2 (533Mhz), but there's no guarantee this will be any better. |
