Well it all depends on what other hardware you already have because the are different sockets
And I would probably go for the 3800+

I concur.

Celerons are, frankly, lousy chips, even running at over 3ghz; crap architecture, slow fsb. And they run hot.

ty for info
i forgot to mention
it was the compaq sr5010nx or the sr5110nx that i was choosing from
but they seemed exact same except the mobo and chip
just wondered which system i should grab as a second computer in the house
amd64 3800+ 2.4g or the celeron D360 3.46g
i was confused because the celeron has 1g higher

Default which processor?

It's not all about the mhz speed of a cpu, it's about how efficiently (power, time) they process. And how quickly they share with the rest of the components in the pc (fsb).

Celerons have a lot of pipeline stages, 16 I think, Athlons have more like 12 (working from memory here).

Intel's older architecture (P4's, Celeron's) were lousy chips hence Intel trying the brute force way of just making them faster and faster. This creates a lot more waste heat, and causes the cpu to run hotter.

Nope, if it'll fit, go for the Athlon but do check it is compatible with the motherboard in the pc.
