i have a E8500 @ 4GHz. i want my videos to render faster. would going quad make it run faster? if so, what CPU would i need?

Do you mean playback of videos?

Or rendering/"editing" your own? If the first, you'd probably see no improvement. Maybe GPU needs upgrading, or if it' being streamed, a faster network connection. If the latter then quite possibly, depends on your usage and how demanding it is. My System: FordyPC

i mean editing and rendering my own HD Full 1080p videos with lots of video effects and stuff.

Even the budget quad at 2.33 GHz has about 9.2GHz of oomph, where as your E8500 has 8GHz. Quad will see a good improvement over dual because Quads are designed for the very purpose of intensive tasks like video editing, compiling etc. Avoid the 6 series quads unless it's the 6600, they overclock to the moon, back and round the bend. The Q8200 and Q6600 are the cheapest with the Q8200 being faster at stock, OC'd to their limits and the Q6600 is faster.
I'm not sure GPU will have too big an impact on the speed of rendering but if you're running an E8500 then you're pretty sure going to have a decent GPU too. |

my GPU is a GTX280. how much faster you think i would get? how high can one OC a Q6600 anyway? and isnt the Q6600 technically not a TRUE quad core?

Q6600 is as quad as it gets haha. Q=Quad. T, P, E = Dual
People have stuck the Q6600 on 3.6GHz while still on air cooling. I think 4GHz is possible on liquid cooling. Your GPU doesn't make much of a difference, if any. You have a good GPU anyway so I wouldn't go spending more money on better hardware for a negligible difference. |

I can vouch for the Q6600 OCing capabilities, I got mine up to 3.5GHz on air, and not even a fancy air cooler I'm talking just the stock cooler.
It's a good buy

so...how much improvement would i see in rendering time?

Probably quite a lot on quad core. More recent ones are often better and the Q6600 seems to be around £175. Q8200 is at about £130. Q9550 is about £150.
Q9550 Q6600 Q8200 I'd go for the Q9550 out of them all. You seem to play games and since most are made for dual core, the higher clock speed and higher cache will be useful. I'd avoid the Q6600 now, the prices are going up with demand. |

what do you make of these charts? which is better when OC'd? go here http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/d...hmarks,31.html for other tests
