| 8GB is probably a bit overkill.

| You could buy either Quad 2GB each of corsair ram or Quad 1GB each of corsair ram. IMO, you should go for 4GB but myself would like to go for 8GB but will have to go for 4GB now due to having the DDR3 a bit expensive here locally and it is not worthed buying it from abroad. |

| 8GB is server territory in my opinion. Why would you want that in a desktop?

| Also ... unless you are running the 64 bit versions of XP or Vista, you wont be able to utilise above 3gb or 3,1gb, so you'd be wasting your money

| Serverguy is correct. So is philthomas. Also, Vista 64 can only make use of 3.5gb. So you'd still not be wasting 4 x1gb dimms, not really. There is no current home application that requires 8gb of bandwidth. There's also no cpu currently on the market that can make use of 8gb of bandwidth, regardless of the speed (or lack of) of the ram installed. "Dual channel" refers to the motherboard using the ram in two separate channels for communication. You'll see the motherboard has it's ram slots in two separate colours. One colour for one channel, another colour for the other channel. To use the ram in dual-channel mode all you need is two dimms both installed in the same colour ram slots.
