I have a laptop that has a 256MB PC2700 266MHz DDR SDRAM stick on it.

According to the manual the laptop is compatible with the following
Memory type: DDR SDRAM 333 / 266MHz, PC2700 / PC2100
Memory Expansion: 0 / 128 / 256 / 512 / 1024MB, 2.5 Volt 64-bit bus
One 184-pin DIMM Sockets, Max 1 GB

I bought a 1GB DDR PC2100 266MHz RAM stick from Ebay to upgrade it but it doesn't seem to work.

Is it a compatability problem or is the RAM stick not working? is there any other way of testing it?

Thanks in advance

From what you've put it should be compatible.

The only real way of testing would be to put it into another laptop.

Have you tried this sodimm by itself after removing the 256mb sodimm that was already in the lappy?

One thing though, sorry for asking, but have you actually plugged this ram chip into the laptop? because the specs you quoted state "184-pin"

Laptop sodimm's come in (either side) the 144 pin or (standard) 200 pin variety for DDR memory.

Standard desktop DDR ram has 184 pins. So colour me confused!

Thanks for the input.
I also discovered that my PC is 184pin PC2700 so I tried it on that by itself and the PC refused to start up.
So that stick is on its way back and I've bought a brand new stick for an extra three quid in a shop with a lot less hassle.
I've always been a great promoter of Ebay but perhaps with used peripherals it may be better to stick to a shop you can take it back to.
The seller I bought this stick from has been extremely understanding and has immidiately offered a refund. However, as it stands with used goods on Ebay, It's definitely a case of buyer beware!

Interestingly, this laptop uses normal 184 pin DIMM

........err, yeah.

Find out something new every day.

Nice! .

Good thing it does really, or you'd have had to find another lappy to test it on. At least this way you've been able to just plug it into a desktop.

Glad it's sorted anyway.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but
http://www.offtek.co.uk/ddr.php?subc...memtype=PC2700
gives an image of the stick that fits (the top one). It is the 184 pin non EEC one.
I've never tinkered too much with laptops, I assume the 'norm' is 200 pin SODIMM sticks next down on the web page.
If it's of any interest, the laptop is an old EI Sytstems 4411 laptop from PCWorld
