Default RAM Underclocks - ASUS P5Q Motherboard / Intel Q9550 Processor / 2x2GB Corsair

Hello all,

I'm new to this forum, i hope to find some help on a new budget gaming rig that i have build.

I could use some help on setting my fsb correctly... now i have all the bios settings on auto an it runs all smooth, but... if i run diagnostic tools they tell me my memory is at 399mhz.. tho it supposed to be 800mhz sticks.

I have an ASUS P5Q motherboard with a intel Q9550 processor and 2x2gb Corsair PC2-6400 800mhz.

the fsb and multiplier settings that i detect with cpu-z r...

FSB 333
CPU 8.5
RAM 5:6

however my CPU multipier goes to 6 automaticly when processor is idle

i would think it should be:

FSB 400
CPU 7
RAM 1:2

resulting my ram at 800 and processor still at 2800.

however i dont feel so safe bout seeing my multiplier change automaticly all the time, so i dont realy dare to type in the values in my bios... if my CPUmultiplier would go up to 8.5 at 400mhz it would overclock the processor to 3400 what could be a bit much maybe.

Double data rate = 800/4 = 400mhz. So that's fine.

Turn off speedstep to get rid of the multiplier changing.

The CPU's FSB speed is what matters .The optimal here is it running at 333mhz (x8.5 for CPU = 2.83ghz) and 666mhz on the RAM (rated 333mhz), so what exactly is the problem? Changing everything to get up to a higher RAM speed won't give you anything concrete as far as performance.
