hi i hope you can help as Pb forum is a bit funny giving out info i need.
As this P/B istart only came with 512 k on vista(if i had known at the time would not have got it) the first thing to change was the ram to 2gb i want to know is it safe to use the Intel e2xxx family of chips as this is what i have found out.
1 the celeron d360 in this comp is based on a p4 65nm and the e chips are based on the p4 65nm socket 775 all Intel did was destroy half the cache but they are the first non branded duel chips from Intel and a lot cheaper.
2 I know how to change the chip but alas i so far have gotten conflicting answers.
This comp is over one year old now so any warranty is invalid anyway i just want to give it more oomph
P's the p/b site only says p4 socket 775 and celeron socket 775 but i am pretty sure that that info was written ages ago and is so out of date
PP's sorry about the long post

Hi cragtom:

The problem with this one is that the Pentium4 and Celeron's are actually single core processors. I'm not sure if your motherboard is supporting dual core processors. It doesn't seem like it to me in which case the Intel E2xxx processors might not work... Or only core might be detected.

Cheers:
Chris

As i was saying desertfish
A user on the pb forum had a rio3 motherboard with a e2140 installed
And this is the$64000 question P/b said it should not have shipped with that chip in but as both his and mine are rio3(rc415) boards then more than likely i can have one as celeron d are p4 65nm and intel e chips are p4 65nm (x2) same voltage as ours and everything
OH p's he ugraded his to a e2180 no probs i had a look at intel about the echip and i found out this
1 intel to do with the law on thermodynamics(heat) thought i know we will try and double up on the p4 and e chips are what you get it was an experriment before they made proper duel core chips i looked on intel and wiki

Well... I found this Ukrainian site where they sell systems with the rc415(rio 3) and an Intel E2140 processor on it. If the E2140 works, then the E2160 and 2180 should work as well. don't see any problems there.

Besides, althoug it doesn't state what motherboard is in the system, Dell's Optiplex320 is based on the ATI RC415+SB600 chipset which is the same chipset as I found to be installed on the rc415(rio 3). Dell does state that the Optiplex320 supports PentiumD's. I think we can safely assume here that Packard Bell told you a lot of rubbish.

BTW: could you please refrain form using too many abbriviations and text speak in the future? It makes reading posts quite difficult.

Cheers:
Chris.

Thank you Desertfish that is what i was thinking about P/B in the UK so you might buy a new computer and not just the chip .
On ebuyer e chips are only about £38-57 boxed
