a power problem has rendered my motherboard and maybe my cpu useless. i have tinkered with components before, but never these. my processor is amd athlon 64 3000 1.8ghz, but i have no idea what the motherboard is, only that it is an Asus. is it easier just to replace both?

If the CPU is an Athlon 3000, it's most probably a Socket 754 motherboard, which is quite old now and you may have trouble finding a replacement Socket 754 board.

It would probably be easier to change both ..... that way you can bring your system up to date, you will also need new ram, as your existing ram will not work with current mobos. In fact, depending on your budget, you may be better off considering a new box altogether.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/

http://www.ebuyer.com/

Check out these for a new mobo, cpu, and ram.

Overclockers are my fav but if your on a budget then ebuyer is more then perfect, i just prefer overclockers as ive used it more often ^_^ there are other sites but these are my top for delivery time and condition plus ebuyer is easy on the pocket.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...)%20-%20Retail

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...%20Motherboard

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...TwinX%20(2x1GB)

Total: £133.91

This should do for day to day tasks like surfing, emailing etc, but this is just an idea on where to start, try ebuyer if your on a budget.
Also are you 100% sure the problem lays with your mobo or cpu? i mean have you tested them on a different comp? because your psu is normaly the first thing to go before the rest.

Thamks for replying! I have already replaced the PSU which is now working, but i receive no beep when i switch my unit on. The memory installed is 1gb PC3200 DDR memory. will this definatley need replacing. I am on a budget as this is most definately an unexpected repair! Just another quick one, my graphics card is a medion 6610 XL donated by a friend can you tell me if this is AGP or PCI Express.

Thanks again

PC3200 Ram is DDR Ram, whereas most new mobos will use DDR2 Ram, so it is very likely you will need to replace it, unless of course you can find a replacement board to match your existing one. Do you know the make and model of your existing mobo ?

The Medion 6610XL appears to be a PCI Express card according to this site. Has this graphics card worked ok in this box previously ? ...
