My motherboard has cut-off temperatures at 60, 65, 70, 75 and 80. If I were overclocking I'd be happy to cut off at 75 and then trim back so I never went over 70, leaving the cutoff at 75 still.

What's your motherboard, what cpu are you planning to overclock on it? What cooling do you have available?

I have a asus A8N SLI-DELUXE not used the sli and doubt if i will, and have o/c my opteron 165 (locked at 9x multi) to 2400, same as a 4400 X2 (had it to 2600 on kids m/b) and i use air, modded the front to take 120mm fan and use a freezer 64 pro for cpu

So how hot did you let it get before you pulled it back? What do you set your cut-off at for normal unattended use?

60-65 is really the max you should be running at for C2Ds.

My overclocking is all pre-dual, I'm here so I can find out what people do in practice now. Pre-dual, 80 was bad and not always survivable.

I have my shutdown temp set at 60c which as the temp rises makes the cpu fan work harder, thankfully it idles at around 34c-35c and have not seen it go over 50c even after it has been under stress for ages, i had deciced to leave it at present o/c settings because this gave me the best of both worlds i.e. a decent o/c allowing me to play the latest games/video and photo editing, and it allowed the temp to remain low so safeguarding the life of the cpu
when i did o/c further the system became unstable not because of the temps but because the fsb cant handle a 270 fsb o/c but at 267fsb is was stable with idle temps at 42c-45c but at load it was reaching a temp of 55c which i thought was a bit to close to my shutoff temp so pulled it back and to honest i doubted if i would see any real gain in performance and probably shorten the life of the cpu further.

Mine shut diwn earlier playing Sims 2, it's an Athlon 64 only overclocked from 2.4 to 2.7 ghz, I'm wondering if that could be to do with voltages rather than temps tho because I checked in the bios and it was only about 40-45 celcius. I think I can go a fair bit higher with it than 2.7 if i upped the voltages a bit more even though I have a multiplier lock on it and super-cheap ram.
