You are right .... Dell do use non standard connectors and sometimes their cases will not accept standard ATX or Micro ATX mobos.
The PSU more often than not, will have different pinouts, so even if you manage to fit a standard mobo, the chances are you will need a new PSU too.
You may find it easier to get a new Case and PSU and fit a standard mobo in it, utilising the other parts. Another point to bear in mind is ..... if you dont have an OS Disk, the Dell preinstalled stuff may baulk at the new mobo, if it's not a Dell replacement.
I guess it all depends on how much time & effort and cash you want to spend on it
As you have probably gathered by now .... Dell's are not the best of PCs, to work with, when things need fixing or upgrading.
