Treat everyone on the basis that if you don't understand what or why then they've not explained sufficiently and you can reasonably ask them to expand and justify their comments. I've killed more computers than most people, it's just not been made illegal yet. On a PC level some of the extremists here could legitimately call themselves Dr Mengele and at least one member qualifies as Typhoid Mary.

Hi
I dont understand why i seem to have cured it but it now works ok.

Changed the battery with no results.

Took advice and removed all cards then reintroduced them one at a time to identify anthing causing problem.

The grafix card was the first to go back in and same old problem occured. I took this back out but tried each other card in turn , just for in case there was another bad card.

They were all ok, computer started up alright on reintroducing each card.

I put the grafix card back in as a retry to test it again but this time everything works ok.

Powered down and up several times and things seem ok. Strange beasts these computers.

Thanks again

We shockingly knowledgeable folk call that a seating error. Like at dinner parties where people throw trifle at each other.

I'm delighted it worked. That battery will save you from having to change it at Christmas.

All's not well,

It appears that if i shutdown and leave the computer for a period, say 1-2 hrs, and then try to start up it still takes a number of attempts before it will start up.

If i shut down and start up straight away then no problems it starts up.

This has happened without me doing anything to the system. the tower has been in the same spot for 5 years without me touching it or adding anything to the computer software.

anybody any further ideas

Thanks

Hi'

Back to square one. The computer will not start if it has been stood for a couple of hours. If i start it straight after a shut down then it boots up ok, but if i leave it for a longer time period then it takes about 10 to 20 attempts to boot up with the same bios screen as i mentioned at the beginning of this thread.

Silly me thinking that we had solved the problem. Any further ideas anyone.

Thanks

From the description so far it's related to the graphics card. Since you don't have access to an AGP4x replacement to test with I think it's going to be hard to get any further.

I looked on the holy grail of Asus A7 debugging, http://www.7vtroubleshooting.com/for...n/yabb/YaBB.pl and I couldn't see anything similar. Given that reseating pushed past the error at least for a while it's tempting to try to get an alternative AGP card in there just to know. A working AGP4x Radeon 9800SE like yours went for £5.50 including delivery on ebay this month, if you want to keep an eye open for something under £10 you might pick one up within a couple of weeks.
