So I added another 2gb of ram to this system yesterday and my temps just dropped to idling in the mid 30s, maxed at 46 at load. Have a new HSF coming too, so I'm hoping to reach load in the 30s!

You mean adding RAM dropped your temperatures

That shouldn't make diddly squit of difference to CPU temps!

Ok, I was "playing" more with the Realtemp and clicked the "test sensors" button. and got the following results:

Temp concerns on Q9550-capture.jpg

what does this mean?

It basically means that your Core 1 sensor is stuck. So you won't get an accurate temperature reading on that core.

Have you tried running the test more again?

You could try and take the chip back to where you brought it from and tell them it is defective, or otherwise just ignore the fact that one of the sensors is dud.

It won't actually make any difference to the performance of the chip.

Do you notice a considerable lower temperature on this core when you read the temps off?

Yeah, I've run it a few times and gotten the same results every time.

To your other question, no. Actually core2 is consistantly the lowest in temp.

So in summation, you say that even though the temp sensor is stuck, it's no big deal? I mean when i did the stress test, core 1 jumped right up there with the other 3 lol and was within a degree or two of the rest. But on the other hand, when I go to Fry's to get my cooler, it's only another 15 seconds of effort to pop the chip out. If the sensor is stuck, what else is waiting for a good excuse to go bad...........

No, TBH I wouldn't bother returning it. I'm just saying that you probably do have grounds to return it, as long as you were well set up with evidence.

If the temps climb with the others, then you are fine. They just might not be very accurate on that core.

I doubt anything else will go wrong.

Ok, thanks. I'll probably leave it then. I saw the cooler you recommended in the other thread for the build dude and it looks like it mounts on top of my current fan so why bother to take it off. LOL I'm kind of a "if it's not broken, don't break it" kind of guy.........

I don't know what you mean by the fan mounts on top of the existing fan???
