Hi, I'm considering upgrading my PC's CPU from an e6300 (1.8 Ghz core 2 duo) to an e8400 3.0 Ghz core 2 duo.
My motherboard is an MS-7301, PC was a Packard Bell stock built which I've added a 500W PSU to and have ordered an 8800GTS 512mb for. Will my mobo be compatible? What about the BIOS? I', a total novice at CPUs and was just looking for some advice! Thanks in advance. |

Your board is compatable with the E8400 so it should just be a straight swop

Will I need to upgrade the BIOS? Better safe than sorry?
Its a Phoenix 3.03 atm. Latest upgrade is 3.7. |

Well according to your specs it states that you can run anE8400 but makes no mention of having to upgrade the bios, so at this mo intime id say no

MS-7301 natively supports 1066 FSB. Should work fine out of the box.

I have this exact same setup and have just upgraded from core 2 duo 6600 (2.4mghz) to an e8400. As soon as put the e8400 and start, the system hangs straight away. I put the 6600 back in and everything is fine. Is this a chip problem do you think, or a basic incompatibility problem?
thanks for your help Bob |

Incompatibility, most likely. Throw in the 6600, flash the BIOS and see if you can't run the 8400.

It won't run in the motherboard without some messing about.
Flashing the bios in this instance will sort the vrm settings for the cpu (probably - check with the manufacturer) but it won't work without the fsb being overclocked from it's stock 266mhz (quad pumped - 1066mhz) to 333mhz (quad pumped - 1333mhz). So as it stands, no, it won't work in the motherboard.

The 6600 is a 1066mhz fsb cpu. The motherboard natively runs, max, a 1066mhz fsb. The E8400 runs on a 1333mhz fsb. That's why it's not working. If possible, you'll need to overclock the fsb from 266mhz to 333mhz.
