Default Very LOUD computer...

Hi all.

I bought a pc off a mate of mine, just as a computer to experiment with, turned it on and it was incredibly loud...the only fans on it are the psu fan and the cpu fan.

Specs are:

Pentium 4 1.5ghz (skt 478)
608mb of ram
Gigabyte GA-8SIMLH mobo
2x 20GB hard drives (Western digital and seagate)
Windows XP.

It gets on my nerves after a short while. Also i forgot to put there is a slight grinding noise coming from somwhere, but the noise is so loud it makes it hard to dtermine which fan it is.

it may not even be a fan. try taking them off the power, and see if you hear the noise or not. if you still hear it, it's likely from a cd-drive or a hard drive.

if you don't hear it, then it's one or the other. and from there you just plug one or the other in. not hard to figure out.

clean the fans as much as you can see if it makes any difference,
if the noise level stays the same even after windows has booted up and youve left it for 5 mins id say it prob is the psu

I did clean the cpu heatsink/fan, as there was alot of dust buildup, yet it was still horribly noisy.

The bearings go too, if it is one of the fans just replace it.
