| You sound like you're going to be using your pc for similar applications to myself. I'll be video encoding and using photoshop primarily. But there will be some gaming as well. I need you to be more specific in regards to the 8800 card as the Ultra requires around 160w, the GTX around 135w, The new G92 512mb GTS around 95w, the 512mb GT around 80w and the 256mb GT around 50w, the original 640mb GTS around 120w and the 320mb GTS around 105w. These are at Nvidia reference speeds. For 3rd party overclocked cards, of which the majority of ones you can by are, the wattages will be higher. As far as future proofing goes, this is based around the motherboard. I'd be looking at the P35 or X38 chipset, maybe X48. You want to see fsb support of 1333mhz, and if possible, 1600mhz for the new Nehalem Intel Cpu's. 1333mhz supports Penryn. If you want to future proof the cpu, then you're going to struggle. A new model range, yes, of the original conroe core2 architecture, is being released pretty much every year or so now. Hence my motherboard comments above. But for now, The Q6600 is an awesome buy (3.6ghz on air is not unheard of at all). So as you can see it's very overclockable. More and more apps are being released to make use of 4 core's. But as Nehalem is being released in a couple of months at the outside, if you can wait, then do so. If not, and you want a solid quad core then it has to be the Q6600. I'm unsure as to when Intel will release a Nehalem version of the Q6600, so you may be waiting longer for this bang-for-buck cpu.

| Thanks thats really helpfull, I had my last mobo and cpu for 4yrs so I would like to keep my new system for a while. As for graphics card, probably one of the GTS models, I'm currently looking at the XFX 8800GTS 512Mb GDDR3. |

| Okay, taking all that into account, and that you may be going liquid cooling I'd recommend the Enermax Infiniti 720w. It's overkill for now but should you add anything (like a w/cooling setup) you'll find the extra wattage handy. If it makes any odds, I've ordered the same psu.

| I know many of you on here are going to think I'm completely mad! But Ive decided that I just can't get anything other than an AMD cpu. I'm going to wait until the Phenom improves and get one of those, even if the Intel equivalent is slightly better. But does anyone know when the AMD Phenom 9900 is going to be released in the UK or any other better Phenom? thanks |

Even if you're taking the inferior chip, , choice is yours as it's your money. ![]() One thing though, it's nice to see someone supporting the underdog. If AMD fade into obscurity then there's no telling what will happen to the prices of Intel chips as competition always drives prices downward. So well done for that. No idea on the 9900 as yet. Maybe email AMD themselves? They should be more than happy to answer as their customer base is shrinking.
