Memory Standard on Motherboard
Hello - I'm currently building my first computer.

If I were to choose this motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813188024
And this memory:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231145

Would I be wasting money by choosing a motherboard with a memory standard of DDR2 800 and a memory speed of DDR2 1000?

Instead, should I go with this memory:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122

Thanks.

well if a board only supports ddr2 800mhz then if you apply a 25% overclock that memory will run at 1066mhz. however this motherboard is one of the best and im sure it supports ddr2 1066hmz, mabey its discryption was written at the time with the mobo's early bios only supported 1066hmz or mabey its just written incorrectly. if you chose to apply this overclock and you dont nessesairly want to overclock your cpu you can lower its multiplyer.

Unless you are actually wanting to overclock your computer, go with the slower stuff anyway, it plenty unless you are wanting to Overclock. Also, i wouldn't recommend the 780i chipset, unless you are actually requiring SLI support, a P45 is better value, and will run alot cooler.

Unless you are using a E8400+ and OCing it over 4.7ghz or so, anything higher than DDR 800 is a waste of money.

DDR3 is a separate issue. But it's still a waste of money too. It should give a pretty good increase - eventually. But not yet, and the clock speeds offered now are going to be laughable when i7 rolls around. It's not the P4 days when speed mattered & PC-2700 -> PC-3200 was a big jump. Solely overclocking RAM really has no usefulness at this stage in the game - it's all about doing it in combination with the CPU to keep a 1:1 ratio anymore.

In general, stupid people will always buy overpriced hardware just to show off. We see it with quads, we see it with DDR3, we see it with multi-TB setups with horrible platter density stuck in RAID 0, dual 8800 Ultras when the 8800GT outperforms each one. They are the hardware equivalent of those guys who buy crappy import cars and stick giant spoilers on them and don't know what torque or horsepower are, or the audiophile who buys $599 gold plated cables for his digital sound system.

I would much rather talk to someone that doesn't know anything about hardware and tell him what parts are the best and why, than to one of the people who think increasing their LCD's refresh rate and turning off V-Sync will make them an XxxXtReMe GaMER. Those people are the bane of my existence: they don't learn, they don't shut up, and they absolutely love spending money on pointless gizmos.

That's why it's important to provide quality advice to people starting out like the OP, as if you post this sort of thing on overclocking forums or a myriad of other sites people will pick up some crazy ideas.

To be honest, i'm a little like that Carbon, however I know it won't be much better, but I still want it, but I have managed to carm myself down alot and not get stupid stuff, but advice I give is always best value stuff, without the added "I have better than you" element to it.
