I think it's when you fill all four of your memory slots with identical spec RAM.

Sorry Dave, but that's incorrect.

Simply put quad-channel refers to the number of communication paths between the cpu and ram. At the moment, mainstream, there's 2 paths hence running your ram in 'dual channel'. Putting 4 dimms into all four ram slots will just provide more ram per channel.

As we're seeing more and more quad-cores being released, and also ddr3 becoming more mainstream, bandwidth is becoming more of a concern for motherboards.
