| A Celeron "D" 940 running at 3.2 mhz is faster than a dual core duo running at 1.8mhz. The thing that you need to address is "how much RAM have I got?". More RAM lets your processor work faster no matter which one it is. If you're running any kind of two core processor with less than a gig of RAM, then you're not getting your money's worth out of your processor. And don't forget about the heat output of the high-end processors, If you're gonna run the big dogs, bring a big fan, or two. |

| The fastest processors you can buy right now are the Intel Core 2's, some are dual core but the top one is, in my opinion the extreme version QX6700 with 4 (quad) cores and 8MB cache. It runs a 4x2.67MHz so that's 11GHz and you could probably overclock it too. A very serious and powerful processor with a price (£600) to match.

| Don't forget Intel have now released a quad-core extreme running at 2.93ghz per core. Its difficult to quantify exactly which model of chip is faster than another manufacturers due to the fact the architecture's different. AMD's have the memory controller on the cpu which does away with the fsb, which is a bit of a bottleneck for intel systems. (Although Intel are believed to be doing this on their new model coming out next year, its not the Penryn but the 'other one' who's name escapes me at the mo). If your question refers to the megahertz rating, then you've simply to choose the fastest processor speed out there (Intel's old extreme 9** series p4 ran at 3.73ghz stock). If you mean speed of working then i'd have to go for the Core2's. Reduced pipeline stages over the p4's, they have their basic architectural roots in the Pentium 2. Each core2 has been proven to knock the smeg out of the equivalent mhz speed AMD. You've then got to take into account that not all applications/games are written to make use of multiple cores. So you may have a p4 6** series cpu running at 3.2ghz, and then upgrade to a 9** cpu, with each core running at 3.2ghz and not see any increase in working.
